Braves’ Sale and Tigers’ Skubal win Cy Young Awards

Atlanta’s Chris Sale and Detroit’s Tarik Skubal each won their first Cy Young Award on Wednesday night after the left-handers shared the MLB lead with 18 wins while leading their respective leagues in strikeouts and ERA.

Tigers avoided arbitration with INF Andy Ibáñez by agreeing to a one-year contract.

No word just yet on the financial of the deal, but the 31-year-old infielder had been projected by MLBTradeRumors.com to earn $1.5 million through arbitration. Ibáñez excelled as a masher of left-handed pitching and pinch-hitting specialist for the Tigers during their miraculous playoff run in 2024, so expect him to operate in a similar role in 2025. Unfortunately, that doesn’t give him much value from a fantasy perspective.

Tigers claimed LHP Bailey Horn off of waivers from the Red Sox.

The 26-year-old southpaw struggled in his time at the big-league level with the Red Sox in 2024, posting a 6.50 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and a 13/10 K/BB ratio across 18 innings. The Tigers’ brass must see something that they like though and given their recent history of turning unheralded pitchers into viable bullpen arms, it’s difficult to argue with them.

Tigers avoided arbitration with INF/OF Zach McKinstry by agreeing to a one-year, $1.65 million contract.

McKinstry played a nice role on the Tigers’ surprise playoff squad in 2024, slashing .215/.277/.337 with four homers, 23 RBI and 16 stolen bases while appearing in 10 or more games at five different positions. Barring any major changes to their roster construction, expect the 29-year-old utilityman to function in a similar capacity once again for the 2025 campaign.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Tigers are among the teams interested in free agent third baseman Alex Bregman.

Tigers’ owner Chris Ilitch is on record saying that he’ll be willing to spend once the team is ready to contend, and the fact that the Tigers surged to the postseason in 2024 proves that they are ready. Bregman has a strong working relationship with Tigers’ manager A.J. Hinch. The Astros are intent on doing everything that they can to keep the 30-year-old superstar, so the Tigers may need to overspend to secure his services. The Red Sox have also inquired on Bregman and expect all of the usual suspects to be in the mix as well.

Tarik Skubal won the American League Cy Young Award.

Skubal celebrates his 28th birthday with his first career Cy Young Award, receiving all 30 first place votes in balloting, following a transcendent 2024 campaign where he helped lead Detroit back to the postseason with an American League-leading 2.39 ERA (2.39) and 228 strikeouts across 192 innings (31 starts). He’ll be the first starting pitcher off the board next spring in all fantasy drafts. Royals veteran Seth Lugo finished second and Guardians stopper Emmanuel Clase came in third.

Tigers signed INF/OF Jahmai Jones to a minor league contract.

It’s not known if there’s an invite to spring training, but there’s a good chance he’ll be there as a non-roster invite. Jones was last with the Yankees, and the 27-year-old appeared in 33 games with a .238 average with New York in 2024. He’ll likely compete for a utility spot with the Tigers in the Grapefruit League.

Tigers selected the contracts of RHP Chase Lee, RHP Tyler Mattison and RHP Tyler Owens from Triple-A Toledo.

The surprise here is that all three are ranked outside MLB Pipeline’s top 30 in Detroit’s system at the moment. They’ll all be guarded from selection in next month’s Rule 5 Draft.

Tigers designated RHP Ricky Vanasco, INF Eddys Leonard and RHP Brendan White for assignment.

It’s a bit of housekeeping for Detroit as they manage to clear three spots on their 40-man roster to shield some of their better prospects from next month’s Rule 5 Draft.

Tigers’ prospect Josue Briceño became the first player in the history of the Arizona Fall League to win the Triple Crown, leading all players in home runs, RBI and batting average.

The 20-year-old backstop came out of the gate hot and never slowed down — slashing a blistering .433/.509/.867 with 10 homers, 27 RBI and a 21/15 K/BB ratio over 90 at-bats in his 25 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions. The Tigers sent Briceño to Arizona to get some extra work in after a sprained right knee limited him to just 40 games at Single-A Lakeland. In doing so, they got to see Briceño’s effortless power shine through as he took the league by storm and increased his prospect pedigree.

Tigers C prospect Josue Briceño clobbered his league-leading 10th home run on Wednesday in Arizona Fall League action.

Briceño is the first prospect to launch double-digit homers in the AFL since Mike Olt accomplished the feat back in 2011. The 20-year-old backstop was limited to just 40 games last season at Low-A Lakeland and figures to open up next year back in the lower minors. His over-the-fence pop is unquestioned and he figures to hit for plenty of power once he arrives in the big leagues. That’s unlikely to happen in 2025, but he’s definitely increased his long-term dynasty appeal with his AFL performance.
