Because he gave up eight homers, Hughes had an 8.15 ERA in 17 2/3 innings for Arizona last season. He was far more successful in a tough environment at Triple-A Reno, posting a 2.03 ERA in 48 2/3 innings. He’ll compete for a spot in some team’s pen next spring.

Diamondbacks selected the contracts of 2B Tim Tawa and RHP Joe Elbis from Triple-A Reno.

The pair will be shielded from selection in next month’s Rule 5 Draft. Tawa put up some solid numbers last year in the upper minors, batting .279/.349/.519 with 31 homers and 14 steals in 613 plate appearances between Double-A Amarillo and Triple-A Reno.

Diamondbacks signed C Aramis Garcia to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Garcia, 31, has made in 119 major league games, though just three have come in the last two seasons, and hit .211/.248/.325 in 327 plate appearances. He’ll could compete with Jose Herrera and Adrian Del Castillo for a spot backing up Gabriel Moreno next spring, though he’ll be a big underdog.

Diamondbacks signed INF Connor Kaiser to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Kaiser, who had a brief major league stint with the Rockies in 2023, hit .221/.343/.339 for Colorado’s Triple-A affiliate last season. The 27-year-old will likely serve as Triple-A depth for the Diamondbacks.

Kaplan comes to the Diamondbacks after serving last year as the assistant pitching coach with the Phillies; a position he held for the last three season with Philadelphia. He replaces Brent Strom after Strom was fired following the disappointing 2024 season for Arizona.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that “There are at least six teams who plan to aggressively pursue” Christian Walker.

Walker is 33 years old, which may impact the length of the deal he gets, but he’s also averaged 33 home runs over the last three years and has won three Gold Glove awards at first base. His defensive value and likely short-term contract potentially makes him a more intriguing fit for some teams than Pete Alonso, and Nightengale reports that the Yankees, Mets, Nationals, and Diamondbacks are among the teams vying for his services. Given his power production, moving to a hitter-friendly park could be good news for Walker’s fantasy value.

This one qualifies as a bit of a surprise since Walker represents one of the more likely candidates to take the short-term offer. The 33-year-old remains a certifiable defensive wizard at first base and has launched at least 29 homers in three of the last five full seasons since 2019. He’s a borderline top 10 option at the cold corner for fantasy managers heading into 2025.`

Diamondbacks claimed RHP Seth Martinez off waivers from the Astros.

Martinez augments Arizona’s organizational relief depth heading into the offseason after making a career-high 44 relief appearances last year for the Astros. The 30-year-old righty has made 111 appearances in the big leagues since 2021 and won’t reach free agency until 2029.
Joc Pederson

Diamondbacks OF Joc Pederson declined his $14 million player option for 2025.

Pederson will take a $3 million buyout and head to free agency after posting a .908 OPS with 23 homers and seven stealds in 132 games for the Diamondbacks. The 32-year-old slugger makes a ton of sense as a righty-mashing platoon option on a contending roster. He shouldn’t have too much trouble finding plenty of suitors.
Scott McGough

Diamondbacks declined RHP Scott McGough’s $4 million club option for 2025.

No surprise here after McGough struggled to an inflated 7.44 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 25/21 K/BB ratio across 32 2/3 innings (26 appearances, two starts) this season for the Diamondbacks.
